The last day of the Olympics was one of the very best.
The modern pentathlon was the first ticket we got. It is a random combination of sports that GB has in general been pretty good at. We had the world champion Mhairi Spence and Lancashire lass Samantha Murray.
The fencing started at 8 so understandably we didn't quite make it in time. When we got there Spence was doing well and Murray had lost 7 out of 7. Over the course of the morning Spence fell away a bit and Murray stormed through to end up in mid-field. The swimming gave us the opportunity to sit in the best seats in the Aquatics Centre. It also allowed Murray to show her fish like qualities and fly into 3rd place.
The main reason you go the modern pentathlon is the show jumping though. Random horses are dished out and some contenders slip away in a torrent of refusals, falls and fences knocked over. Murray did OK but Spence had to deal with a bit of a lunatic horse and her chance was gone. In the grand finale Murray put in a brilliant performance and got a silver medal. Clitheroe will be proud.
At the point we bid farewell to brother Sam who had foregone the chance to go to the closing ceremony. The best birthday present ever? I think so.
The ceremony itself was brilliant. Musical legends from the last 40 years plus some new ones for the kids. High points would be pretty much everything. Low points would be George Michael's new song (eh?) and Fatboy Slim playing a record (not that low a point but I couldnt think of anything else).
