The 1992 Olympics were in Barcelona. While they were on the Douglas family were on holiday. Most of the things I remember were athletics as while the athletics was on we were in Italy and the campsite we were staying at had a big screen TV that was just the job. I also remember quite a lot of Italian excitement one afternoon about Fencing - I gave that a wide berth though.
Men's 100m Final
Linford had been our only hope of sprint glory for ages and this was his big chance. Looking back on it the standard wasn't that high (he was the only one under 10 seconds) but you can only beat what is put in front of you (Fredericks, Burrell, Mitchell, Surin). Ben Johnson was there too but he wasn't so good when not on drugs.
Derek Redmond - Glorious Failure
We had someone in the 400m final (David Grindley - anyone?) but all anyone remembers is the sight of Derek Redmond being helped down the home straight by his dad after pulling a hammy. THE most olympic thing ever.
There was also Gally Sunnell winning the hurdles but I can't find any clips of that.
Gold medals were a bit thin on the ground that year as we only won 5. Along with Linford and Gunnell in the athletics we got 2 in the rowing and Chris Boardman got one on his space age bike.
The Searle Brothers Have Beaten the Abagnales!!!
I would imagine that thhis is as good as rowing gets - they'll never win from there!
Chris Boardman + LOTUS = Fast
They don't do this event any more, which is a shame because we always win it. Wiggins would surely win it if it was still a going concern. I have come up with a new event called the eternal pursuit. Instead of chasing each other for 4km they chase each other until someone gets caught up. It would be a great game of cat and mouse. Where do I send suggestions to?
